Kiwanians grateful for chance to give back to community - 09/20/2017

When former U.S. president Jimmy Carter visited Winnipeg last month to build Habitat for
Humanity homes, it brought back fond memories for Norman Velnes of Carter’s first visit to the city in 1993.
Velnes is a volunteer with the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, which was involved in Carter’s 1993 Habitat build.

Norman Velnes and Bruce Berven are longtime volunteers with the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg.

"That was a hugely exciting project," the 75-year-old recalls.

It’s just one of the ways Velnes has given back since he joined Kiwanis in 1984.

Jack Goodman awarded the Walter Zeller Fellowship - 08/21/2017

Walter Zeller made the first gift to establish the Kiwanis International Foundation in 1940.  In honor of his kindred spirit of generosity, through a re-envisioned Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg Foundation, Jack Goodman is presented with the 2017 Walter Zeller Award by Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg Acting President and WCC co-chair, Norm Velnes.

Jack's vision will assist countless kids in Winnipeg and Manitoba through the Winnipeg Foundation and most important of all, will help put Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus where it belongs: in the medical history books.

Congratulations Jack, job well done!

Norm Parish Turns 100! - 06/14/2017

Several members of the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg joined long time Kiwanian Norm Parish on June 11th to help celebrate his 100th Birthday.

Kiwanis lending a hand at West Broadway Youth Outreach Run - 06/12/2017

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg lent a hand to the West Broadway Youth Outreach annual 5ish Run that was held on Sunday, June 4th.  The run began at Mulvey School and did a 5ish km loop to Omands Creek and back to the school yard for activities, food and fun!
All proceeds raised go directly to support WBYO programs that have a tremendous impact on kids, their families, and our community. We can’t wait to meet you and thank you in person!

Cecil Rhodes School Builders Club donates to help refugees - 05/29/2017

Kiwanis Western Canada's newest Builders Club, Cecil Rhodes School in Winnipeg, had their first
fundraising project recently - selling hot dogs at the school.  They raised $630 and donated the money to the Canadian Muslim Women's Institute, to assist with undocumented refugees walking across the Canada/US border, often with only the clothes on their backs.

The Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg Inc. has established a Community Support Fund administered by
The Winnipeg Foundation which will make annual grants to qualifying and deserving charitable organizations in Winnipeg, essentially displacing the granting activities formerly carried out by The Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg Foundation Inc.  Guidelines and procedures for applicants have been updated to embrace current service mandate of the Kiwanis clubs internationally and to mirror common application protocols of other philanthropic organizations in the community.\

West Broadway Youth Outreach giving hope in the community - 11/27/2016

Ken Opaleke of the West Broadway Youth Outreach visited the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg on Thursday, November 24th at our lunch meeting to give a glimpse of the great things that Ken and his team are doing with youth in the West Broadway area.  Many of the programs offered give the kids a feeling of pride and ownership of the outreach program and more importantly gives them hope to achieve greater things once they put there minds to it.  The moto of WBYO is "A child's potential ends...just beyond infinity"

We Remember - 11/19/2016

Major Rob Nesbitt joined the Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg on Thursday, November 10th for the annual Remembrance Day Lunch Meeting.  Major Nesbitt presented a video tribute in remembrance of those who are currently serving and who have served in the past and who have given their lives so that we can live in freedom.  Major Nesbitt also shared some of his personal experiences while serving in Kandahar as a drone pilot. 
We thank the men and women of our Armed Forces for what they have given and continue to do in the name of freedom and peace.


St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog pays a visit - 07/06/2016

Kiwanian, Terry Imhoff, spoke at the weekly Kiwanis meeting with his companion, Flora, who is a very special part of the community. Flora is a St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog who visits folks who can use a little friendship and sunshine in their day.
